Hinterlands

Hinterlands is a pilot residency programme by the Canal & River Trust inviting artists to “explore waterway corridors as a creative space for five communities across England and Wales”.

As one of 5 artists I was commissioned to explore and research the stretch of the Mon & Brecon Canal which runs through Pontypool and Griffithstown, a part of the canal which, in contrast to the leisure spaces further up the canal, has a distinct sense of urban/rural – an edgeland.

Research focussed on another zone of transition – between life underwater and that found above it. Working with Griffithstown Junior School we devised ways of investigating the underwater world through sound, as wearable, portable hydrophones which also doubled up as temporaray, itinerant sculpture.

Commissioned by Peak and Canal & River Trust, funded by Arts Council of England and the Arts Council of Wales.
