By train and walking

The Sugar Loaf is about 3 miles from Abergavenny train station. The most direct route from the train station is directly through the town centre (via Cross Street, then Frogmore Street).
Opposite Tesco, cross the main road and walk up Pen Y Pound, then onto Hill Road.
Turn left onto Chain Road, then Pentre Road.
Follow this road up a long, steep hill for a mile or so
After a cattle grid the road turns sharp left at the top of the hill
Keep right then follow the road onto the open common
Stay on the road until you reach the National Trust car park (not the unofficial one, the official one with a stone trig point kind of thing)

(There are much prettier routes which are car free too, but this is the most direct)

From Cardiff, Newport and Abergavenny

From Abergavenny take the A40 towards Crickhowell.
As you leave Abergavenny you pass Nevill Hall Hospital, then a car showroom on the left.
Take the next right down a narrow lane, signposted to Sugar Loaf Vineyards (if you pass the pub on the right you’ve missed it!)
Take the next left up a narrow lane with a stone wall on the left
Turn left at the end and follow this road up a long, steep hill for a mile or so
After a cattle grid the road turns sharp left at the top of the hill
Keep right then follow the road onto the open common
Stay on the road until you reach the National Trust car park (not the unofficial one, the official one with a stone trig point kind of thing)

From Crickhowell, Brecon etc

From Crickhowell take the A40 towards Abergavenny.
Just before you enter Abergavenny you pass the Lamb and Flag inn on the left.
About 200 yards after the inn, take a sharp left down a narrow lane, signposted to Sugar Loaf Vineyards.
Take the next left up a narrow lane with a stone wall on the left
Turn left at the end and follow this road up a long, steep hill for a mile or so
After a cattle grid the road turns sharp left at the top of the hill
Keep right then follow the road onto the open common
